FULL DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING CONTENTS
Preparation The Galileo Teacher Training Programme (GTTP) website will have all relevant information related to the training event such as: course description, detailed programme and travel guidance. Participants should be capable of attending sessions in English. All participants will be invited to bring their own computers. A complete digital package with all the needed material will be made available to participants. Participants will have access to documentation related to the topics and educational capability of the content.
Objectives This training event was prepared for an audience with interest in new methodologies to address science and science related topics using as a guideline: Educational Games, Scientific Illustration and Astronomy.
Games for education are considered nowadays one of the Holy Grail for engaging students and inspiring them in science topics. ICT and games are part of their daily lives and its pedagogical capability is overwhelming. The main objective of this training is to prepare adult trainers, teachers, science center staff and other professionals interested in methodologies for science education and outreach using serious games as a tool.
The training will provide practical examples for addressing real data handling (Research Based Science Education) while promoting the learning of different science topics in a learn by doing approach. This methodology has been successfully addressed in various countries and its capability of merging with other tools and techniques is very broad. The power of such tools for adaptation to curricula content and grade level is also enormous. Participants will learn how to use these tools as promoters of critical thinking, problem solving, communication and presentation skills.
The tools presented in this programme are very broad in their capability and can be a powerful ally for the teaching of a vast range of topics from history and arts to real research in classroom. The interdisciplinary approach is explored in this programme reflecting practical approach already used in after class and in classroom training efforts in UK, US, Kenya and Portugal. The different approaches to skills needed to build games are foreseen as an integrator of different skills enhanced in these practices.
Methodology The team of educators for this training event was carefully selected to address the different topics in a deep but also pedagogical approach. The design of the programme includes lectures followed by theoretical/practical sessions and practical sessions where the participants will have the opportunity to experience modern knowledge and challenges involved in each area of expertise. Field trips to visit a planetarium, historical places and to observe the night sky are also contemplated in the training. The approach that will be used in this training was successfully implemented in several education venues promoted by University of California at Berkeley, Learnit 3D (experts in games for education) and the Galieo Teacher Training Programme (www.galileoteachers.org), one of the cornerstones of IYA2009 and recognized by UNESCO for their value for education. (GTTP was awarded the second runners-up for the Many Bhaumik Prize for Astronomy Education Excellence).
Participants will have the opportunity to experiment:
– Content delivery using serious games as the environment.
– Continous evaluation of students throught the game back office.
– Promotion of Inquiry Based Science Education while using free tools and resources (available on the web) and adapted to the curricula in several countries.
– Promotion of real research in classroom while addressing curriculum content.
Participants will be able evaluate the session during the venue and afterward. They will have the opportunity to evaluate the training sessions, the trainers and the afterward usage and applicability of the resource. Daily discussions will be promoted to assess the tools, their prospects and the used methodology.
Follow-up The construction of a large support network for science educators is in the core of these group activities. All participants will be invited to actively participate in our already existing and active social networks and forums and, to exchange their experiences and successes via our website or periodical newsletter. Participants will have follow-up support from trainers and other science educators already trained in similar venues around the globe.
Participants will have the opportunity to evaluate the session during the venue and afterward. They will have the opportunity to evaluate the training sessions, the trainers and the afterward usage and applicability of the resource.
